Philaster developed naturally enough from Cupid’s Revenge, in the same way that Cymbeline developed from Pericles, so there is no need to presume anything more than a parallel progression in the processes of composition of the two plays. There resemblance is more important to their dramatic genre than to their dating.

About Philaster I shall say in brief that, prior to the identification of its principal plot thematic source (The Man in the Panther Skin) in English literary criticism it was suggested that by that already highly popular play, Beaumont and Fletcher are related through a separate plot situation to Alonso Perez’, sequel of the English translation pastoral short story Diana, by types of characters to Philip Sidney’s Arcadia, and by separate emotional situations to Shakespeare’s tragedies.
